Oddity of the Week

O’Reilly is horrified to discover that, according to this Daily Kos poll, self-identified Republicans actually believe what Fox News is saying.

Some highlights:

  • 39% believe Obama should be impeached; another 29% are not sure.
  • Only 42% believe Obama was born in the United States.
  • 53% believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama*.
  • 77% believe intelligent design should be taught in public schools; only 42% believe that sex ed should.

*In all fairness, this is probably based on their belief that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S., rather than on a judgment of Obama’s competence.

Fox uses the tagline, “Fair and Balanced.” Some people who defend the Fox claim that the news is fair and balanced, and the opinion is simply opinion. According to this train of thought, opinion doesn’t need to be fair and balanced. But I don’t think that is true. I think a fair and balanced treatment of an issue would include a presentation of opinions on both sides of the issue. That is a fallacy of Fox – there is no attempt at presenting balanced opinions.

By the way, opinions aside, Fox gives a pretty biased presentation of the news as well. For example, today one of the headline issues on the Fox web site is, “Sarah in 2012? Palin says she is willing.” I agree that Sarah is news, but Fox has featured her disproportionately with her importance every day for the last week. This is typical of the Fox News news coverage. They almost always have a prominent article that panders to the Fox conservative base. While the articles are factually correct, they are given more importance than they deserve.
